LOCATION

DESCRIPTION

Is Your House Making You Sick course will be held IN PERSON.

This course covers threats posed by naturally occurring health hazards such as mold and radon; man-made materials and components such as asbestos and lead-based paint; as well as other air quality pollutants, including environmental tobacco smoke and volatile organic compounds. Learn the sources of these toxins, their affect on our health, what laws provide us with protection from them, and what disclosures are required for them in real estate transactions. You will also learn how to guide your customers in the identification of potentially toxic issues in their homes, in how to reduce exposure, how to test for their presence and extent, and how to remediate the problems so there are no remaining issues that could affect a successful sale and closing.
Course Objectives:
  • Demonstrate the importance of presence/potential presence of indoor air pollution.
  • Recognize the major contributors to bad indoor air quality, including lead-based paint, asbestos, radon, and mold.
  • Identify other sources of indoor air pollution such as combustion gases, tobacco smoke, and formaldehyde.
  • Assess what effect bad indoor air quality can have on people’s health.
  • Identify when a red flag should be raised that an indoor air quality problem could affect a real estate transaction.
  • Describe the legality of disclosures for indoor air quality as it relates to real estate and when disclosures have to be provided.
  • Assess case studies and scenarios to demonstrate which laws apply and to whom a real estate agent has the responsibility to disclose pertinent information about indoor health hazards.
  • Evaluate the possibility of a concern arising with a real estate transaction as a result of an indoor pollution problem.
  • List types of testing that can be done, if available to determine presence of indoor air pollution.
  • Assess options to rectify an indoor air quality problem, if present.
  • Prepare a plan with customers to reduce exposure to indoor air quality issues.

Course material will be emailed prior to class.
