Speaker Bio
Dr. Justin Robertson serves as Superintendent for Hamilton County Schools, headquartered in Chattanooga, TN. As superintendent, Dr. Robertson has the responsibility to inspire, lead, and direct the district’s administrative, instructional, and operational teams in setting and achieving key performance goals for the school system. As chief executive officer, Dr. Robertson’s primary objective is to accomplish the district’s mission: to ensure that all children thrive and experience a future without limits.
Dr. Robertson began his career as a teacher and coach at Boyd-Buchanan School in Chattanooga before relocating to Memphis, where he worked as a teacher and school-level administrator in Shelby County Schools. Dr. Robertson returned to Chattanooga to join Hamilton County Schools in 2008 as an assistant principal at Normal Park Upper. The following year, he was named principal at Lookout Valley Elementary School.
Dr. Robertson went on to serve as principal for Brown Middle School from 2010-2012 and Red Bank High School from 2012-2016. Under his leadership, Brown Middle School achieved double-digit gains in student achievement, and Red Bank High School improved from school improvement status to become a Level 5 school.
Following his work at the school level, Dr. Robertson moved to the district office, where he has served as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Chief Schools Officer, Chief Operations Officer, and Deputy Superintendent.
As Chief Schools Officer, Dr. Robertson worked alongside the School Leadership Team and the Teaching and Learning Department to support the growth of teachers and school leaders. A big part of this effort was to establish consistent practices across the Hamilton County School District. Dr. Robertson focused on improving outcomes for students to ensure they are inspired and prepared for success after high school. He also aligned the two departments to ensure consistent support for schools to focus on meeting the goals of the HCS district strategic plan. This work led to historic gains for Hamilton County Schools and resulted in the achievement of Level 5 District status in 2019.
During his time as Chief Operations Officer, Dr. Robertson oversaw facilities with more than 7.5 million square feet of floor space that serve more than 44,000 students. He led the Transportation Department, which operates buses that travel more than 20,000 miles per day through a combination of contracted services and employee drivers. He also guided the School Nutrition Department as they prepared 26,000 meals per day, and he supervised Campus Supports, which provides guidance for athletics and student discipline across the district.
Dr. Robertson has been married for more than 20 years to his wife, Casey, who is a pharmacist at CVS Specialty Care at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. They have a daughter, Henley, who attends Hamilton County Schools.
