What’s Bugging You?

DESCRIPTION

We all have to deal with many insects outside and inside our homes. Some can do damage to our homes and some insect bites can be very dangerous to our health. Agents are in a position to educate the new home owner about the various insects that are found in the southeastern states: ants, flies, silverfish, centipedes, millipedes, stick bugs, lady bugs, kudzu bugs, Indian meal moths, and roaches. At the conclusion of this class, the learner will be able to identify common insects that invade their homes. Some of the stinging, biting insects are yellow jackets, fleas, mosquitoes, scorpions, ticks, and spiders. Information is provided about treatment options for wounds inflicted by insects to protect the health and wellbeing of the family. Yellow jackets, wasps, and scorpions can inflect painful stings. Home remedies may help until medical treatment can be obtained. Advances are continually being made in the pest control industry to control pests the way nature intended; a safer and more environmentally friendly treatment while helping prevent and/or control insect invasions. The return of the bedbug in alarming numbers has become a major concern for the EPA. We provide knowledge of how to protect themselves and the options for the treatment to eliminate bedbugs. At the conclusion of this section, the learner will be able to recognize a bedbug infestation and explain the treatment options to others.
